Mark Boal (born January 23, 1973) is an accomplished American journalist, screenwriter, and film producer known for his work in films such as The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty. With a background in journalism, Boal has contributed to publications like Rolling Stone, The Village Voice, Salon, and Playboy. His article “Death and Dishonor” was adapted into the film In the Valley of Elah, which he co-wrote.
Boal’s original screenplay, The Hurt Locker, was based on his experiences embedded with troops in Iraq during the Iraq War. The film earned him Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture. He collaborated again with director Kathryn Bigelow on Zero Dark Thirty, earning him Academy Award nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture. Boal has won numerous awards throughout his career, including BAFTA and Producers Guild of America Awards, and has been nominated for four Golden Globe Awards.
